You may have heard of Semaglutide as it has been all over social media and the news for its success with weight loss. Semaglutide was originally used for diabetes under the name Ozempic to control blood sugar levels. On June 4 2021 the FDA approved Semaglutide, under the name Wegovy for adults with BMI over 30 or with BMI over 27 and at least one weight related comorbid condition such as hypertension, sleep apnea and others.

At NUVO Aesthetics Clinic  we use an FDA registered compounding pharmacy to obtain Semaglutide. In some cases, patients’ insurance will cover the branded Wegovy.

Semaglutide is an injectable prescription medication that works by mimicking an incretin hormone called glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1) that stimulates insulin secretion and lowers glucagon secretion after you’ve eaten. It also causes a slowing down in how fast the stomach empties and signals to the brain a feeling of fullness. This results in a very powerful and lasting appetite suppression for most patients in addition to improving blood sugar levels. The goal is weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week.

Most common side effects are nausea, diarrhea, constipation, feeling tired or dizzy. Initial side effects lessen with time and the dose is gradually increased over time to help minimize side effects.

Who is NOT a candidate for this medication?

Patients with a history of medullary thyroid cancer, or a family history of multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2. If you have a history of diabetes, Semaglutide could lower the blood sugar too much.

In combination with a reduced calorie intake and increased physical activity, semaglutide can be extremely effective in helping people lose weight.
